Russell Wilson has won the 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for the first time in his NFL career. The Walter Payton award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field. The award was established in 1970 and renamed the Walter Payton award after Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton in 1999.

Each NFL team gets to select one player that they believe fits the criteria for the prestigious award. The winner of the WPMOY receives 250,000 dollars to the charity of their choice. Russell Wilson has decided to donate his winnings to his personal charity, Why Not You Foundation.
Wilson’s off the field impact has been huge sense he has entered the league, however this year he really set himself apart. He donated one million meals to Feeding America, in efforts to help families affected by the coronavirus pandemic. His work with his nonprofit, Why Not You Foundation, is focused on education, children’s health and fighting poverty. Amidst a pandemic, Russell Wilson also has been able to make his frequent stops at the Seattle Childrens Hospital, something that he has always done sense entering the league back in 2012.
Russell Wilson has won many awards in his football career, but this award has got to feel a little more special than most. Not only does it attest to his talents on the field but highlights his acts of kindness off the field.
