Today the Portland Trail Blazers have announced that they have signed 18-year veteran center Pau Gasol to a one year deal. The deal is reportedly worth $2.6 million and appears to be fully guaranteed for the year.
Gasol split time last year with the Spurs and the Bucks, averaging 3.9 points and 4.6 rebounds a game. His season was cut short by a season-ending foot injury that required surgery. He’s expected to be fully ready for the start of training camp at the end of August.
This will round out the Blazers roster and give the rosters a much-needed rotation big. The Blazers were lacking depth behind Hassan Whiteside and Zach Collins. Gasol will be able to spell both men at each position, but keep his own minutes low. The Blazers have an abundance of players at the wing position and we’ll probably see Kent Bazemore playing the four off the bench quite a bit this season.
Gasol is also the first player with an NBA Championship to sign with the Blazers as a free agent since Will Perdue all the way back in 2000.
