Sounders get all 3 points in win over defending champs

A goal by Harry Shipp in the 71st minute gave the Seattle Sounders a 2-1 win over Eastern Conference foe Atlanta United, Sunday at CenturyLink Filed in Seattle. With the win the Sounders remained undefeated at home and jumped into 2nd place in the Western Conference table.

The game was a back and forth affair through the first half. Both sides had plenty of opportunities to take the early lead in the opening 45 minutes, but neither side could get a quality shot on frame.

Raul Ruidíaz gave the Sounders the lead in the 58th minute with a goal that might be up for goal of the year in the MLS. On a through ball by Christian Roldan, Ruidíaz played it off his head. He then flipped it over his defender with his right foot before finishing in the top left corner over United keeper Brad Guzan. The goal was Ruidíaz’s team leading 7th goal on the season, despite only playing in 11 of the teams 20 games so far.

The lead did not last long, however. With a corner in the 65th minute, Gonzalo Martínez whipped a ball in that met the head of teammate Josef Martínez. Last season’s MVP redirected the ball right over the shoulder of Sounder keeper Stefan Frei, who had no chance of deflecting the header.

The Sounders, who were not to be denied 3 points on the day, responded quickly. In the 71st minute, Jordan Morris intercepted a United pass and quickly flicked the ball to Nicolás Lodeiro. Lodeiro gave the ball right back to Morris in the box, who then crossed it in front of goal to find a wide-open Harry Shipp. Shipp headed the ball past Guzan as Seattle sealed the 2-1 victory.

With the win, Seattle picked up their 10th victory and 35th point of the season. At a record of 10-5-5, they currently sit between the Los Angeles clubs at 2nd in the Western table. Atlanta (9-3-8) on the other hand missed their chance to climb into the top two in the East as they currently sit in 4th with 30 points.

The Sounders, who have won 3 of their last 4, will play host to German power Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday for an international friendly. They will return to MLS play next Sunday, July 21st as they host Cascadia rival Portland Timbers. That will be a 6:30 kick off at CenturyLink Field.
