Sounders win shootout with Galaxy, 4-3.

In a back and forth affair that took all 90 minutes to decide, the Seattle Sounders took down the LA Galaxy Sunday at CenturyLink Field.

For a game that finished with such a high score line, not much action took place in the first 45. Both teams came out of the gates sloppy and seemed to be a step slow. Turnovers and poor touches were plentiful as neither side could gain much of an edge. The only real action was a collision between Xavier Arreaga and Jordy Delem, which led to Delem needing to be subbed out for concussion protocol.

Raúl Ruidíaz didn’t let the half end scoreless however. In stoppage time, the Sounders leading goal scorer knocked home a pass from Nicolás Lodeiro to give the Rave Green the 1-0 halftime lead.

The second half was an old fashioned shootout with both teams coming out guns blazing. Seattle struck first as they extended their lead to two off of a rebound put back goal from Christian Roldan in the 55th. Many fans in the stadium felt they were on their way to victory, until Zlatan Ibrahimovic cut the lead in half with his header in the 66th. It was Ibrahimovic’s 23rd goal of the season.

Those two strikes opened the floodgates. The Sounders scored in the 77th as Jordan Morris took the goalkeeper one-on-one. The Galaxy scored in the 75th (Antuna) and the 81st (Skjelvik) to knot the game up 3-3 in the final 10 minutes of the match.

The Sounders, which saw two second half leads get blown, didn’t concede on this day. In dramatic fashion, Roldan tapped in a pass from Brad Smith to score his second goal of the game in the 89th minute. The goal would be the game winner and secure 3 points for the Sounders.

With the result, the Sounders move back to 2nd in the west table. They currently have 46 points and have a 2 point lead over 3rd place San Jose. The La Galaxy continue to drop in the west as they finish the match in 6th. Depending on how the LAFC and Minnesota United game ends later, they could be looking at 7th by days end.

WHATS NEXT:

The Sounders will be back in action September 7th, as they take on the Colorado Rapids. Seattle beat Colorado in their only other meeting of the season back on March 9th, 2-0 at CenturyLink Field. The upcoming matchup will be a 6:00 pm kickoff from Sporting Goods Park.
