Last night at Washington Hall, Tacoma native Shane “Swerve” Strickland announced his departure from DEFY wrestling.
Strickland faced off against another local talent, Darby Allin, at the DEFY Dragon Spirit event. However, it was what happened after the match that everyone would be talking about. Strickland, the former DEFY champion, got on the microphone and announced to the Defiance that the time had come for him to move on to “bigger and better things.”
Rumors have been swirling around Swerve’s next move for a while, since he declared himself a free agent on January 15. Strickland was also an MLW champion, and he was written off that promotion’s TV last year. We know that he will appear on EVOLVE 124 in a six-man tag match against NXT stars The Street Profits and Velveteen Dream. PW Insider is reporting that WWE is, in fact, interested in Strickland’s services to join those superstars on its black-and-gold brand.
Strickland, who also appeared as Killshot in Lucha Underground, was treated to a hero’s sendoff by the DEFY locker room, who surrounded the ring and had a massive singalong with the crowd to Strickland’s theme music.
Wherever Swerve ends up, some promotion is getting an extremely talented professional who will be a proud representative of the 253.
